Psalmist Lawonda Campbell passes

The Gospel Community is saddened with news of the passing of noted gospel singer Lawonda Campbell on Saturday, February 26th in Chicago, Illinois.    Campbell, whose immeasurable talent and unmistakable voice produced a string of  hits for a venerable list of gospel artists including Chicago Mass Choir, the Trinity All Nations Choir, Carlis Moody, and most notably Bishop Hezekiah Walker and the Love Fellowship Crusade Choir.  The audio of Sweeter as the days go by can be heard in the youtube clip above.

Her life will be celebrated over two days beginning with a musical on Friday, March 7, 2011 at Chicago’s Apostolic Pentecostal Church of Morgan Park, 11401 South Vincennes Avenue beginning at 7 p.m.  The services will continue on Saturday, March 8, 2011 with visitation at 10 a.m. with funeral services following at 11 a.m. at the St. James Ministries Church of God in Christ, 11750 South Lowe.  Pastor W. James Campbell is the officiant.

TV Reminder: BMI Trailblazer’s Luncheon Airs Saturday!

The event that has grown to be hailed as one of the most exclusive and powerful events in Gospel Music will air on TV this Saturday. The 12th Annual BMI Luncheon honoring Commissioned and Pastor Shirley Caesar will air on GMC February 19, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. with an encore following at 8:30. The luncheon was filled with heartfelt tributes, words of encouragement, and great memories.

This Year’s Gospel Grammy Winners

The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards were held Sunday February 13, 2011 in Los Angeles, California at the Staples Center. Yolanda Adams represented the entire Gospel Community as being the only Gospel performer during the live show, in tribute to the “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin. Bebe and Cece Winans proved to be the big winners in the Gospel category as they took home both awards they were nominated for.

Kirk Franklin…Encourages You To “Smile” :-)

2011 is certainly proving to be the year of return for some of the veterans of Gospel Music. Gospel innovator, Kirk Franklin has released a new single entitled, “I Smile” in anticipation of his new album “Hello Fear” to be released on March 22nd. The single is making its debut after Franklin delivered power packed performances at the 2010 BET Celebration of Gospel.

Kirk is also giving his fans the opportunity to be apart of the video for “I Smile” by allowing them to upload a picture of their best smile, and allowing users to go online and vote for their favorites on Facebook.

Yolanda Adams To Perform on The Grammy’s

GRAMMY Award Winning Singer and National Syndicated Radio Host Yolanda Adams is set to perform on this year’s Grammy Awards. The singer will join Jennifer Hudson, Christina Augilera, Martina McBride and Florence Welch in tribute to the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin.

The 53rd Annual GRAMMY’s will air live on Sunday February 13, 2011 at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.

Sold Out Crowd for 2011 Super Bowl Gospel Concert

The 2011 Superbowl Gospel Concert hosted by CeCe Winans proved to be a huge success despite Dallas, TX having the worst snow storm in 15 years. The show celebrated its 12th year with a night of inspirational messages and high praise. On hand for the celebration were Pastor Donnie McClurkin, Mary Mary, Israel and New Breed, and Marvin Sapp. The concert also featured a performance from the 2010 Verizon How Sweet The Sound Winners, Voices of Destiny.   Each year the NFL Players get the opportunity to pick their, “Player’s Choice”, an artist who they would like to have perform on the show, and this year Stellar Award Winning James Fortune and Fiya were selected.

The NFL Choir returned this year under the direction of Myron Butler rendering background vocals to Cece on  “I’ll Take You There”, and on “I’m Walking” with Pastor Donnie McClurkin. Members of the choir included players from the Dallas Cowboys,  Chicago Bears, Raiders, and Steerlers.

Superbowl Gospel was sponsored by Verizon Wireless is the only NFL Sanctioned Gospel event and has served as a fundraiser to charities across the United States. The 2012 celebration is scheduled to be held in Indianapolis, Indiana during Super bowl weekend.
