Projects You Might Have Missed:Leanne Faine – Serve The Lord

Friday, May 27th, 2011

You would have to be living in a vacuum to not remember the glory days of Reverend Milton Brunson’s Thompson Community Singers.  Affectionately known as the Tommies and hailing from Chicago, Illinois- the Gospel Music Capital of the World, this choir dominated the charts during the 80s and 90s with multiple hits fronted by masterful musicians and skilled lead vocalists.  Leanne Faine was a huge part of the TCS hit machine(The Holy Ghost, Guess You’re Wondering) and went on to even greater acclaim with regular appearances on the Bobby Jones Gospel Show on BET and touring with Dr. Jones’ Nashville Super Choir ensemble.  With 2solo projects under her belt (the self titled “Leanne” and “Conqueror”), the end of 2010  brought the release of her latest effort Serve the Lord.

Backed by a group of hand picked singers whom she christened Favor, Leanne brings the liquid smoke, lighter fluid and fire to the bar b cue on this project.  Here lies a treasury of gospel standards done “Leanne Faine style”.  The Power Plays include When the Gates Swing Open, Come to my Rescue (yes, the Luther Barnes one), her own cover of  the Tommies’ Just a Prayer Away, a tribute to fellow TCS member Ethel Holloway in the form of He’ll Make it Alright and a contemporary Can I Get a Witness.  The title cut Serve the Lord and He Kept Me round out the disc.  Its unequivocally all Leanne and very nicely done.

Thursday Thoughts: Stand The Shawn Mac Project

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

In light of the fact there is a new Shawn McLemore project out this week and because there is a chance that you might have missed this project in 2010, we thought it best to put it on spotlight.  As a preface, I would have to question how one listens to CD’s.  Do you skip all the other stuff and give a good listen to the song you heard on the radio (does radio airplay even work these days) or do you listen from beginning to end?  However or whatever your method, I am sure that Been So Good got your “churchy-fied” attention.

Let me add that it’s a good thing that  Been So Good was not the first track, because you would never finish the CD.  Once you hear it, you are instantly caught up in it (you grab a tambourine, get a couple friends to clap while you dance, pass out, call for the ushers, have your friends  form a circle around you until you fall out, then get a sheet to cover you (is this the sanctified church?) or stand over you fanning until you get back up,  get some water,  sit in your chair, think of God’s goodness  and then it hits all over again).  This would be classified as a definitive project and while it is long overdue, it was well worth the wait.    If I Have the Faith, There Aint Nothing, Overflow and God is Good are nice cuts too.

Damien Sneed named Musical Director for Sunday Best on BET

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

One of Gospel’s favorite sons Damien Sneed is assuming a new role after being named musical director for Sunday Best, the hit Gospel singing competition television show on the Black Entertainment Television (BET) channel. Sneed has arranged more than 90 songs and collaborated with the show’s contestants, background vocalists, band members and executives as musical director for season four of the Sunday Best series.

The television show, which is being filmed in Atlanta and eclipsed more than 1.1 million viewers during its third season debut, showcases the vocal talents of artists from across the country in a competition to become the next great gospel star. Sneed compliments the cast of luminaries on the show which is hosted by gospel icon, Kirk Franklin and judged by veteran gospel recording artist, Donnie McClurkin and the award-winning contemporary gospel duo, Mary Mary.

“It is truly an honor to serve in this capacity, working with some of the best up-and-coming artists, as well as those who are known and loved by people around the world,” said Sneed, who, before his work with BET, served as a professor of music at the City University of New York and as a staff accompanist at the Juilliard School of Music. “At times, it’s unbelievable— like a dream come true to have so many amazing people in one room.”

The new season of Sunday Best will kick into high gear airing each Sunday beginning in July 2011 through September 2011.
