Bishop T.D. Jakes To Be Honored at 2013 BET Honors

Bishop T.D. Jakes will be honored at the 2013 BET Honors Taping. The Dallas based Pastor will be honored for his Humanitarian Efforts in the areas of education and leadership. The BET Honors will tape in Washington, DC on January 12th and air in February 2013.

Bishop Jakes will also be honored at the 2013 Stellar Awards, where he will be receiving the “Thomas A. Dorsey Most Notable Achievement Award”.  The Stellar Awards tapes January 19, 2013 at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN.

Fontella Bass Passes

GOSPELflava joins others across the world in mourning the passing of Fontella Bass.  Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Bass was “schooled in gospel 101” as her mother was a member of the famous  Clara Ward Singers and she would later serve as  accompanist to her grandmother ‘s gospel ensemble .  Fontella would go on to great notoriety co-writing and recording Rescue Me, the first million seller for Chicago’s Chess Records in 1965.  She returned to her gospel roots in 1990 recording Promises: A Family Portrait of Faith in 1990 with her mother Martha Bass and her brother DAvid Peaston.  In 1995, she recorded no Ways Tired, a collection of hymns and gospel songs.

Verity Gospel Music Group Garners Much Recognition On Billboard, Itunes, & More As 2012 Comes To A Close!!

Verity Gospel Music Group has seen a great year with new releases from its top artists & sustained charting presence from  Kirk Franklin’s 2011 release “Hello Fear”. Top artists on the label include : Marvin Sapp, Kirk Franklin, Byron Cage, Fred Hammond, Jason Nelson, Deon Kipping and more. The label’s hit compilation “WOW Gospel 2012” was named as the #1 Gospel Album of the Year by Billboard. Gospel favorites Marvin Sapp, Fred Hammond, Jason Nelson, and Kirk Franklin were named among the Top 10 Gospel artists of 2012. The label’s parent company RCA Records has also been recognized for the producing the Top Gospel Album of the year and some of the Top Gospel Songs in 2012. Six of Verity Gospel Music Group’s 2012 releases were named on the Itunes Best Gospel Albums of 2012 list. Those projects included: WOW 2012, v4…The Other Side ( JMoss), God, Love & Romance ( Fred Hammond), I Just Want To Hear You (Deon Kipping), Shifting The Atmosphere (Jason Nelson),  and Memoirs Of A Worshiper (Byron Cage).

 Music lovers can look to WOW 2013 for the best compilation of 2012’s Gospel songs as well as new music from Kurt Carr, William Murphy, and Hezekiah Walker. Verity Gospel Music Group artists also received 25 Stellar Award nominations, Four Grammy nominations, and two NAACP Image Award nominations. Legendary Gospel Singer Inez Andrews Passes

Gospelflava joins others across the world mourning the passing of legendary gospel icon Inez Andrews. Our prayers and thoughts are with her family and friends in Chicago and countless fans around the world.

Andrews was a giant in gospel, having sang with Albertina Walker and the Caravans before beginning a career with her own group.  Among her most popular songs are Mary, Don’t You Weep, Lord, Don’t Move the Mountain, He Won’t Deny Me, I’m Willing to Wait and others.

The Stellar Awards announced plans to honor Andrews with the Bobby Jones Legends Award in January.

Quartet Lives On Through the Men of God’s Heart

God continues to raise up men and women to sing his praise.  Such is the case with the group, Men Of God’s Heart.  Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, MOGH counts quartet as one of their major influences and considers the Bolton Brothers as their mentors.  The Men of God’s Heart are uniquely equipped to fuse traditional and contemporary gospel music into what they describe as “quartemporary”.  Their dynamism and energy coupled with the anointing make for an exciting performance and garnered  them top honors at the 2011 Allstate Gospel Superfest.  Today, MOGH continues to forge new ground with the release of their debut CD, No More Secrets

Damien Sneed Does Carnegie Hall

Gospel wunderkind Damien Sneed made his Carnegie Hall debut in early December as part of the “Amazonas” concert series.  The series features the Azlo Orchestra along with guests and soloists that have works inspired by the ancestral power of the Amazon Forest with the purpose of raising awareness and bringing attention to the Amazon rainforest through the universal language of music.

James Fortune Ranks #1 on Billboard’s Best of 2012 Year End List

GRAMMY Award Nominee James Fortune is ending 2012 on a high note. His latest album “Grace Gift” is in stores and climbing the chart, he’s signed a new management deal with EJ Gaines and Pathlight Music, and was recently nominated for two Grammy Awards Best Gospel Album, and Best Gospel Song.

Now James has been named as the Number 1 Gospel Artist on Billboard Magazine’s Best of 2012 Gospel Songs/Artist Year Ends List. The album “Identity” was recognized at Number 5 Best of 2012 Best Gospel Album lists and 2012 Gospel Albums/Artists. 

Next month James Fortune and Fiya are headed to the  2013 Stellar Awards where they are nominated for Group/Duo of the Year and Contemporary Group/Duo Of The Year. In 2013 expect new projects from Fortune’s label Fiya World Music Label in partnership with eOne and Light Records.

The GOSPELflava family congratulates our very own Melanie Pratt as a 2013 recipient of the Stellar Women of Gospel Awards.  This  event will be held on January 19th in Nashville, Tennessee during Stellar Awards Weekend.  The awards celebrate the contributions of female gospel professionals working untiringly to bring gospel music to the world.  The event is hosted by Toya Beasley, Founder and CEO of SistaFriendz and will also honor BMI’s Catherine Brewton, publicist JoJo Pada, EEW Magazine’s Diana Hobbs, gospel music professionals Demetrus Stewart and Treiva Williams.
