Sho Baraka Returns to the Christian Hip Hop Scene with New Label Humble Beast

Friday, June 24th, 2016

sho-baraka-642Sho Baraka has found a new home. After leaving Reach Records in 2011 over what he felt were directional differences, Amisho Baraka has popped up here and there with a collab, or project almost as a call home to let mom know he’s ok, but to his fans and supporters. It appears though that Sho is ready to get back into the full swing of things after an announcement tweet from Humble Beast’s account “Welcome to the Family, @AmIShoBaraka. Sho Baraka + Humble Beast — Humble Beast Records”.

Then Humble beast releases a statement and video via their website,

“Sho has always been a friend of Humble Beast & our ministry. Recently, we’ve realized just how similarly our paths and passions are intertwining. After building for a while, it only made sense to take the next step. We are thrilled to work with Sho and are excited for you to see what comes from this relationship.

Sho wanted to let you know where he’s been, where he’s at, and how he got there. Check out his verse, The Road to Humble”

Edwin Hawkins Music Conference Celebrates 35 Years In Chicago

Friday, June 24th, 2016

Edwin HawkinsEdwin Hawkins, the Father of Contemporary Gospel Music celebrates the 35th anniversary of his Edwin and Walter Hawkins Music and Arts Love Fellowship Conference in the Gospel Music Capital of the world, Chicago, Illinois June 26 – July 1st.

“I love Chicago”, said Hawkins.  “There is so much Gospel Music history in the city.  Chicago was the home of the greats, the Father of Gospel Music, Professor Thomas A. Dorsey (who was with us at our first convention) Sallie Martin, Mahalia Jackson, Roberta Martin, Delois Barrett Campbell, Albertina Walker, Inez Andrews, Rev. Clay Evans, Pastor Maceo Woods and the list goes on.  Chicago is now home to the some of Gospel’s current music influencers like Jonathan McReynolds, Donald Lawrence, Ricky Dillard, Tiff Joy and others.  The Lord has allowed us to be together for 35 years, and I’m ecstatic that we get a chance to have a reunion celebration in the Windy City. The key to the continuation of our genre is empowerment through education.  Its up to us to train future generations, giving them the origins and celebrated history of this great music we know as Gospel music to prepare them for whats to come”

The convention begins with a Quartet Concert followed by a Tribute concert honoring Chicago’s legendary Reverend Milton Brunson and the Tommies featuring some of Chicago’s finest community choirs including Malcolm Williams and Great Faith, Paul Turner and CMI, Dexter Walker and Zion Movement and William Smith and RVC. Classes will be offered during the week with nightly services, guest preachers and musicals.  The convention will close on Friday, July 1st as the mass choir presents new music taught by some of the nation’s upcoming songwriters and arrangers.

Thomas Dorsey ProjectThe 2016 Thomas A. Dorsey Birthplace Festival encompasses 2 full days of music in the city that welcomed the birth of the Father of Gospel Music.  Thomas A. His most recognized composition, Precious Lord, Take My Hand, popularized by Mahalia Jackson was a favorite of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“I’ve been around Gospel music all of my life”, says Villa Rica Mayor Shirley Marchman.  I grew up in Villa Lisa KnowlesRica, attending the church that Dr. Dorsey and his family attended, the Mount Prospect Baptist Church and Gospel Music has played a tremendous part in my life, as it has touched many people across the country and the world.  We are proud of the efforts of Professor Dorsey and grateful that we can do our part to make sure that his legacy lives on so that others may enjoy the fruit of his labor.”

The 2 day festival features Blues, Jazz and Gospel music with performances from Eric Ayers and the Thomas A.  Dorsey Birthplace Gospel Choir, Gospel music sensation and Stellar Award winners Lisa Knowles and the Brown Singers, Minister Eddie Robinson and others. Monday, June 20th, 2016

Dennis Reed and GAPThe sheer power of GOSPEL music is felt through the song Necessary, recorded by Charlotte, NC based Dennis Reed and GAP some nearly 10 years ago.  The song had a resurgence thanks to Fantasia posting a video in rehearsal performing the song with members of the group.  Fortified by the video that has had over 10 million views and performances during her concert stops, Necessary has made its way from #11 into the top spot on the Digital Download Gospel Songs chart, selling some over 3,000 +  downloads.

Just in case you’ve been out of the country and on an internet fast, here’s a lyric video for Necessary

Men of Standard Take The Stage At Father’s Day Concert

Sunday, June 19th, 2016

MOSFather’s Day 2016 will go down in history as the First Baptist Church of Glenarden, (the church home of Stephen Hurd and Anthony Brown) hosted a Father’s Day Concert that touted the reunion of Men of Standard after a 7 year hiatus.  It was indeed a great moment as Lowell Pye, Isaac Carree and Bryan Pierce took to the stage to take us down memory lane.  The icing on the cake was the addition of Zacardi Cortez (you can only imagine the utter pandemonium, right?!?!?!?!)

The gentlemen quickly but effectively ran through a number of their hits including the Winans’ Trust In God, Yet Will I Trust In Him, Anointed Song, In Your Will, Latter Rain and I Made It.  The songs had huge impact on the audience as the guys ministered messages of faith and inspiration in the music.  We can only hope that this is the start of a tour and a possible CD in the works.

While we wait on the Men of Standard recording, you can prepare yourself as Bryan Pierce is set to record in August at Mount Zion in Greensboro, NC.
