The Princess of Rhythm and Praise is back! Lisa McClendon has returned with a new project, outlook on life, and an indomitable spirit to praise God no matter what. Gospelflava.com had the pleasure of catching up with the gospel neo-soul songstress to talk about her new release, new lease on life and what’s new outside of music.
Over the past decade, McClendon has wowed us with her sultry, organic, and spiritual vocals. Although she rose to prominence with the song “You Are Holy” from Soul Music (2003), her first CD release “My Diary, Your Life” debuted in 2002 (definitely worth a listen). Subsequently she released “Soul Music”, “Live from the House of Blues” (2006), “Reality” (2009), and “Christmas with You” (2010). However since that time, she seemed to have vanished. Many wondered, “Where is Lisa McClendon?” Her stalwart answer is, “Home.” She jovially added, “I’ve been home. I needed to take time out to be wife and mother. Plus, my husband Maurice had just started a ministry and I needed to be there to help. I knew I had to put some things on hold. It was hard, but it was worth it.”
Now she’s back! What took so long many would wonder? This wasn’t a 3 to 6 month project, McClendon says, “It’s been in the making for the last 3 years.” As to why, “My story wasn’t done” she admitted. As she was doing life, she was gaining life also. If you are a social media McClendon devotee, she talks about her personal ups and downs, especially her bouts with depression. When many would omit this storyline, McClendon shares it. “I share my truth about my depression because truth sets you free. I was truthful and honest with myself.” She described her time away simply as the color gray. “I was confused. There wasn’t a black or white. I hadn’t had my 5 AM moment yet. I had some stuff I needed to experience.” Then her breakthrough came! In the breaking, she felt the desire to write again. “I started pouring out. Every song is a different place during the season that I had to go through.” Her most liberating revelation was, “God told me, I will never be perfect. I said amen. Now, it’s okay. I’m me and I’m progressing.” Life experiences such as these always make for superb song material for stellar albums. Hence her new project “5 AM.”
Syndicated radio host and Stellar Award winner Lonnie Hunter joins the Tyscot family for the release of #Getitdone, his new disc featuring the group Structure. The #Getitdone movement was initiated via an apparel line and has evolved into a music mandate for people who love Gospel music. The first single, Forever I Will, written by Davie Moore is headed to radio in March.
What can be said about Samuel R. Blakes? To his credit, he is an “of note with no doubt” gospel preacher. He serves as Senior Pastor of New Home Ministries, a multi-location ministry in Baton Rouge and New Orleans Louisiana and he inspires the masses via his weekly telecast on the Word Network. Most important, Bishop Blakes knows the importance of close connection with God through prayer as expressed in God Wants To Hear From You, the new single from his debut CD, I Survived. As he sings from personal experience, he is able to convey a message of hope and inspire and uplift people from all walks of life. The single is available on iTunes and has connected with audiences reaching well into the top 50 on the radio charts. Look for the full project featuring guest appearances from Bishop Paul S. Morton and David Hollister with production assistance from master producer Pharis Evans, Jr. later this year.
We told you when we heard Benita Farmer that she was definitely one to watch. Benita prepares to take center stage as Dream Gospel releases Mender of Me on February 17th. The celebrated music teacher by day collaborates with her brother Lawrence Farmer IV on this project with some assistance from songwriter Angela King, producers Anthony Bell and Freddy Washington for this project. Overall, the disc will offer up message music providing an answer to the ills in today’s world. “Jesus is STILL the answer”, she emphatically proclaims. “Whatever our situation, there is nothing out of his reach that He cannot handle, and the love of God is so wide and vast. Think about it, Walter Hawkins wrote that God will never forsake us, even though he knows everything there is to know about us, that’s REAL LOVE. We can find what we need when we come to the Mender.”
Mender hits digital outlets on February 17th.
Award winning songwriter and Inspired People recording artist Pastor Charles Jenkins’ new single War has been effective in sounding the alarm to rally the church to action. “War is a victory anthem, fight song, and an inspirational prayer,” says Jenkins. “I believe everyone is fighting for victory in one way or another every day. Sometimes life is like a boxing ring and Satan brings new and often multiple opponents into our lives. This song is a reminder of who you are, whose you are, and calls on your faith, strength, and hope in God. It is a reminder not to settle for defeat when victory is an option.”
War is the first single from Any Given Sunday, the follow up disc to Best of Both Worlds that yielded the hit Awesome. The new CD features Jenkins and Fellowship Chicago Choir with guest appearances from Rev. Clay Evans, John P. Kee, Beverly Crawford, Byron Cage, Jonathan McReynolds, Sean Hodo, Kevin Vasser, Tanesha Jefferson and the new Inspired People recording artist Donishisa Ballard. The CD hits stores and digital outlets March 17th.
Detroit based label Yunion Productions (previous projects Genocide and the H.E.R Project) returns with Bow Down featuring Chris Lawson. Lawson is currently a featured soloist with praise & worship leader Israel Houghton at the Lakewood church in Houston, Texas. The 11-track praise and worship project features his soulful falsetto stylings with worship lyrics taken from the Psalms. Producer Jason “Maji” Wilson helms three songs on the album, including the lead single, “Due”. Bow Down has already released to digital retail, with video and radio to follow.
Damien Sneed announced news of a distribution agreement with Central South for his LeChateau Earl Records label and the March 3rd release of his highly anticipated double disc Broken To Minister featuring the Levites. The CD was recorded live in Baltimore during the Church of God in Christ Auxiliaries in Ministry Convention.
The works of Sneed and his Chorale LeChateau will be featured alongside jazz great Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in the PBS documentary Everyone Has A Place premiering in Charlotte on February 3rd and will air in selected markets across the country throughout the Spring. The documentary was filmed at Charlotte’s Friendship Missionary Baptist Church during the 16-city national tour of the Abysinnian Mass.
Casey J Live Recording
Date: January 30, 2015
Location: Fresh Start Church- Duluth, GA
Label: Marquis Boone Enterprises/ Tyscot Records
Refreshing, Passionate, Energetic, and Anointed are just a few of the words to describe the atmosphere at Fresh Start Church on Friday January 30, 2015. Hundreds lined up outside the sanctuary in expectation for the move of God that was about to take place. Worshippers were greeted by smiling faces as they were ushered into the sanctuary. VIP’s were welcomed with excellence as their names were written on cards in their seats and offered water so their worship experience would be comfortable. Gospel’s elite leaders such as Micah Stampley, Jason Nelson, and VaShawn Mitchell filled the church along with music industry personalities and figures. The sanctuary was decorated with warm colors, trees, and candlelight to create a warm, inviting, and intimate setting. Casey’s personality shined through the building even before she hit the stage. Prior to the recording, guests watched a video where she took the time to thank her entire team for their hard work and labor.
For her debut project Casey assembled and all-star team of musicians, producers, and vocalist. At the helm of the project is Rick Watford (Andrae Crouch, CeCe Winans, Jason Nelson) serving as Musical Director with musicians Natalie Ragins, and Jesse Bond to name a few. Serving as vocal producer is Rachel James of Bridge, Hooks, and Stuff Entertainment (Darwin Hobbs, Ted Winn, Micah Stampley).
For those that don’t know, Casey J. Hobbs is quickly becoming a well-known name in Gospel music. Her breakout single, “Fill Me Up” has reached the top of the Billboard charts and receiving major radio airplay. Worship leaders all over the country have added the song to their praise and worship rotation.
When you meet this spunky educator now artist leader her inviting personality captivates you. Her sincerity and pure heart bleeds through her crystal clear vocals as the lyrics and melodies flow from her spirit. Her energy is infectious and fans will be delighted when they hear the new music she presents. If you ask Casey about her creativity she will tell you that she is a self proclaimed “ Flower Child” and attributes her creativity to her father who died when she was only 5 years old. Casey is no stranger to music. At the age of 12 she joined the Atlanta Young Singers of Callanwolde and sang with them until she went to college at The University of Georgia.
Worshippers will experience original songs written by Casey such as “The Truth”, “I’m yours”, “Journal” and “Better”. Before each song Casey eloquently explained the meaning behind each song and was very transparent with the audience. She explained that even though she’s a worship leader with a single that’s reached the top of the charts she’s still growing and learning as a worshipper and woman of GOD.
There were several special moments throughout the recording. One tender moment was when Casey’s grandmother joined her to sing the Johnson Oatman Jr. classic hymn “ No Not One”. Casey explained how important it was for her grandmother to join her on this song and how hymns are the foundation of today’s church. In the midst of singing the song, the power of GOD fell in the room and Casey’s grandmother began to pray over her granddaughter and impart wisdom as she takes this next step in her career and ministry. Many found themselves wiping tears from their eyes as they witnessed this young ladies elevation.
In the midst of celebrating the #1 album in the country, Jason Nelson was front and center to celebrate his mentee recording her first album. Casey shared the story of how in prayer one day she began to discover that she was an “orphan”. She had no one to guide her as a worship leader and recording artist. While ministering out of town on the same engagement with Nelson, the two met and he began to impart into her and explained he was called to her ministry. Jason then joined Casey on stage for a song entitled “Have Your Way”. Jason’s smooth and signature vocals flowed wonderfully with Casey’s tone.
Of course the night wouldn’t have been complete without Casey recording her hit “Fill Me Up” written by William Reagan. She explains the song is “ flashback of the true worship experience I remember having during church in my grandmother’s basement”. She explains, ‘the sound isn’t a traditional church sound- it’s worship in its purest form.” Casey says that Israel Houghton has been one of her biggest influences because his music is for everyone and has transcended barriers in Gospel and Christian Music.
Casey’s album entitled “The Truth” is slated to hit stores and digital outlets on April 21, 2015. Her single “Fill Me Up” is currently #1 on Billboard.
