Service arrangements have been announced for Daryl Coley who passed away last week.  Services will be held on April 2, 2016 at the City of Refuge in Los Angeles where Bishop Noel Jones is pastor.

Daryl ColeyGOSPELflava joins countless others around the world mourning the passing of Daryl Coley.  Born October 30, 1955 in Berkely, California, Daryl would gain early exposure to jazz music and display an affinity for playing keyboards early on in his high school years while attending Claremont High with friends Rodney Franklin and bass player Freddie Washington.  The Bay area connection would lead him to found an organize the New Generation Singers (which would go on to do background on James Moore’s first LP) and meet the likes of Walter and Edwin Hawkins.  Coley toured with the Hawkins family, making a unforgettable appearance on the tag of Holy One on Tramaine’s first solo album in addition to being the perfect duet partner for Lynette Hawkins Stephens on Do Your Best from Walter Hawkins’ I Feel Like Singing album. Daryl’s stand out vocals caught the attention of Reverend James Cleveland, that association would lead to his fronting He’ll Never Let You Down for the Gospel Music Workshop of America recording in 1982.  Just Daryl, his first solo album was released in 1986 and received a Grammy nomination.  Daryl would record additionally for Light Records and for Sparrow Records, releasing such standards as To Live Is Christ, He’s Right On Time, It Shall Be Done, He That Dwelleth, Beyond the Veil, Integrity, When the Music Stops and a host of others. Daryl’s body of work outside of Gospel music included a performance of the Star Spangled Banner on The Simpsons and a featured performance on the 1984 Ramsey Lewis and Nancy Wilson album, The Two of Us.

Some of his most memorable performances comes from guest appearances with the Wilmington Chester Mass Choir (He’s Preparing Me, Sovereign, He Shepherds Me) and Donald Lawrence and the Tri City Singers (When Sunday Comes) his improvisation on Quincy Jones’ arrangement of the Hallelujah Chorus.  BMI honored him with the Trailblazers of Gospel Salute in 2013.

Passing of Noted Songwriter and Musician Herbert “Pee Wee” Pickard

DLC and Pee WeeGOSPELflava joins others across the country mourning the passing of acclaimed Gospel songwriter and musician Herbert Pee Wee Pickard (seated at the piano).  A child prodigy and son of a COGIC pastor, Pickard grew up in Detroit, Michigan and trained, directed and accompanied choirs as well as a number of the legends of Gospel including Reverend James Cleveland and the Voices of Tabernacle (his piano accompaniment is heard on their first hit, The Love of God),  Brother Joe May, Professor Alex Bradford and a long stint with the Original Gospel Harmonettes.

Pickard recorded two albums for Savoy Records, one an instrumental and the other with his group, the Pickard Singers.

GOSPELflava joins others around the country mourning the loss of Doris Sykes, lead singer for Pastor Maceo Woods’ Christian Tabernacle Concert Choir of Chicago, Illinois.  In a time when sopranos reigned supreme, Sykes had an inimitable style and held her own amongst the likes of Sarah Jordan Powell and  Hulah Gene Dunkin while serving as inspiration to newcomers like Lecresia Campbell, Felicia Coleman Evans and Tina Watson. Noted Pastor Apostle Richard D Henton Passes

GOSPELflava joins others across the world remembering the life of Apostle Richard D. Henton, founding pastor of Chicago’s Monument of Faith EvaRD Hentonngelistic Church.  Pastor Henton epitomized the pentecostal experience with his fiery style of preaching and exuberant worship. His outreach was expanded through the many revivals and crusades he conducted across the country and lives were impacted through his television and radio outreach ministry, the Breakthrough Hour.

Pastor Henton welcomed many preachers and singers to his church including Pastor Shirley Caesar, Pastor Marvin Winans, Babbie Mason, Bishop Rance Allen, Pastor Beverly Crawford and Bishop Ernestine Cleveland Reems.  Pastor Henton recorded several preaching albums accompanied by his 100 voice Breakthrough Choir.  The Breakthrough Choir was also featured on recordings with Vernard Johnson and counted Keith Pringle and Ricky Dillard as members.

Songwriter and Producer Rickey Grundy Passes

GOSPELflava jRGCoins others around the world saddened with news of the passing of Rickey R. Grundy. A master musician and composer, Grundy’s rise to prominence came with the recording of his song, Call Him Up (Can’t Stop Praising His Name) by Keith Pringle and the Pentecostal Community Choir.  His compositions dominated Gospel music over the next 2 decades in recordings by the Gospel Music Workshop of America Mass Choir, Ron Kenoly, Ann Nesby, Willmington Chester Mass Choir, Rodnie Bryant, Bishop Larry Trotter and others.  Rickey’s choir, the Rickey Grundy Chorale would go on to record for Sparrow Records and in later years, Rickey served as music director for Andrae Crouch.

 

PAJAM Set To Release DeVaughn Murphy Track Posthumously August 11th

As a result of the untimely passing of singer/songwriter and worship leader Minister DeVaughn Murphy, PAJAM/PMG Gospel announced today plans to release “Wevaughn-murphy-296x300 Will Worship,” his new single on August 11, 2015.  Murphy was an established songwriter, having written such memorable songs as “Chasing After You,” “Make Me Righteous”, and “Let Us See Jesus”.   A portion of the proceeds from the single will benefit Murphy’s wife Khia Murphy and the Vaughn Murphy Foundation. “We were honored to know a person with such a huge heart and love for God as Vaughn; his ministry will live on forever. We are deeply hurt, but we know God has a plan,” says Paul “PDA” Allen of PAJAM/PMG Gospel.
