Iconic Radio Personality Edna Tatum Passes

On the heelsEdna Tatum of the closing of the GMWA Board Meeting in Los Angeles comes word of the passing of one of Gospel music’s distinctive voices, the legendary Edna Tatum has passed away after enduring some health challenges.  A tribute service honoring her for her contributions to Gospel music was held this past January.

Known as the “Voice” of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, Edna Tatum found great joy as a  gospel radio announcer in Los Angeles. She caught the attention of Reverend James Cleveland and introduced him and the Southern California Community Choir on several occasions including the Live at Carnegie Hall LP as well as Rev Cleveland’s last recording with SCCC, Having Church .  In 1996, she was joined by Billy Preston for the compilation of a words and music disc.  Her voice can also be heard on projects from Kurt Carr and the Kurt Carr Singers, Bishop Walter Hawkins and the Love Center Choir’s 25th Anniversary Celebration and  Rev. Daryl Coley.

A Valentine’s Day Gift From Earnest Pugh

Earnest Pugh has taken Joe Cocker’s 1975 hit You Are So Beautiful and made it his own just in time for Valentine’s Day.  In his early years, Pugh made a name for himself as “The Wedding SinEarnest Beautifulger” and this song penned by Billy Preston and Bruce Fisher  was one that was requested over and over again.  Of his own experiences with love, Pugh states, “Life has taught me a valuable lesson now on how to give and receive love on a different level.”

Twinkie Clark And Billy Preston Inducted Into Hammond Organ Hall of Fame

In commemoration of th20131223-182012.jpge 80th anniversary of the Hammond Organ Company, Hammond USA initiated a Hall of Fame to honor and recognize musicians who have perpetuated and advanced the legacy of the electric Billy Preston ULorgan. Among the 26 inaugural honorees are Twinkie Clark, chief musician and the driving force behind the famous Clark Sisters and the late Billy Preston, whose credits include playing with the Beatles as well as getting his start in the church recording with James Cleveland, Andrae Crouch and Mahalia Jackson. Over 100 candidates were nominated and voted on via the Hammond Organ Facebook page. A special induction ceremony and concert will be held during the 2014 Winter NAMM trade show in January.

Half Mile Home Impacts Radio with So Good

Ohio based Half Mile Home puts a new spin on Billy Preston’s Nothing from Nothing and craftfully delivers their new single, So Good from their forthcoming CD release Church Muzik & Inspiration.  The 14 track CD will be released on November 6th and features a wide array of music ranging from contemporary gospel to traditional gospel with an “urban twist”.
