David Blakely Puts New Spin On Hymns

Friday, January 22nd, 2016

Blakely HymnalTo say that David Blakely is simply a musician would be a gross understatement.  This talented yet humble individual has spent some 2 decades working with some of music brightest stars including Dorinda Clark Cole, LeAndria Johnson, Mama Sue Roseberry, Rev. James Moore, Gladys Knight, Natalie Cole, Mississippi Mass Choir, Kurt Carr, Edwin and Walter Hawkins and the list goes on.  With the hymns of the church holding a special place in his heart, David sought to put his signature on the music that has been a guiding force in his life .  Thus, the Hymnal (My Interpretation) was birthed.

Blakely, who serves in a number of capacities including the Chief Levite for the Church of God in Christ  defines the project this way: “Music can transcend personal, social, and cultural boundaries. I am humbled that God chose me to bring unity, love, and joy through each instrumental and lyrical interpretation. At the end of the day, if I helped introduce someone to Christ or lifted them from whatever may be going on in life through the music God has birthed out of me, my labor is NOT in Vain”.

A CD Release event is scheduled for Friday, January 22nd with special guests to include  Giloh Morgan, Nikki Potts (Kurt Carr Singers) and Lena Byrd Miles.  The Hymnal (My Interpretation) will hit all digital outlets in the coming weeks.

COGIC Readies for Live DVD/CD Recording

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Dr. Judith Christie McAllister, President of the International Music Department of the Church of God in Christ announced (via the COGIC website) news of the COGIC International Mass Choir’s return to the recording scene after a fifteen year absence.  A live recording and DVD taping will take place in November during the Church’s annual Holy Convocation, which moves to St Louis after being held in Memphis, Tennessee for over 100 years.

The Church of God in Christ was a preeminent force in gospel music for over 25 years.  Under the leadership of the late Dr. Mattie Moss Clark, the “A Song is Born” series featured original compositions of COGIC writers, producing such hits as I Can Do All Things, Hallelujah, Forgiven, What a Friend and others.  Their last CD, He’ll Bring You Out (featuring appearances from Karen Clark Sheard, Dorinda Clark Cole, the late Olanda Draper, Bishop Richard “Mr Clean” White, Queenie Lenox and the late Bishop Walter Hawkins), peaked at number 16 on the Billboard Gospel Chart and stayed on the charts for more than 35 weeks.
