Kathy Taylor, Luther Barnes and Byron Cage Headline Gospel Mix Tour

Gospel Mix 2016The Gospel Music Workshop of America will play host to the first stop of the Gospel Mix 2016 Tour, taking place on Sunday, July 24th in the Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton Hotel in Birmingham, Alabama.

This year’s tour brings together legends Luther Barnes and The Canton Spirituals with Kathy Taylor, Earnest Pugh, Byron Cage and choir master Ricky Dillard. Joining the praise party are Gospel favorites Zacardi Cortez, James Fortune, the trio Half Mile Home, quartet king Damon Little and others.

The music of the Gospel Mix Tour makes up this year’s installment of the Top Ten best-selling album “Kerry Douglas Presents Gospel Mix 2016” that features chart-topping hits such as Zacardi Cortez’ “#YDIA,” Damon Little’s “I Won’t Be Defeated,” Byron Cage’s “Like No Other” and Half Mile Home’s “More Than Enuff.

Gospel Giant Al Bishop Hobbs Passes

It is with joy and sadness that we announce the home-going of our beloved GOSPEL INDUSTRY AFICIONADO, Dr. Al “The Bishop” Hobbs.

 

Al “The Bishop” Hobbs was simply one of the most interesting personalities you’re likely to ever cross paths with in this industry.  Wearing as many hats as some specialty stores offer, Hobbs has earned the title of ‘Bishop’ with an empire to accompany it.  He was responsible for the operation of two gospel record labels, and served as chairman of the Gospel Announcer’s Guild and  Vice-Chairman of the industry’s leading organization – the Gospel Music Workshop Of America, Inc. (GMWA), under the leadership of Bishop Albert Jamison.

 

A recording artist, announcer, meeting planner, event coordinator, and successful entrepreneur, he was born June 4, 1943 in Decatur, Alabama.  He is the father of Alex Carrington Hobbs, Asha Gabrellia Hobbs, and Bridgett Hobbs.

DrHelenJHStephensdd1074GOSPELflava joins others across the globe mourning the passing of gospel music trailblazer Dr. Helen JH Stephens Amongst her many contributions are the organization of the “The Voices of Christ” of Berkeley, California which recorded for the Savoy record label.  Dr. Stephens traveled nationally with the late Rev. James Cleveland, and is most notably known as the organizer and long-serving Chapter Representative of the Northern California Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA), officially retiring in 2013. At the time of her passing, Lady Stephens remained an Emeritus member of the GMWA National Board of Directors.

The life and legacy of Dr. Helen JH Stephens will be celebrated in words and music as she lived. Arrangements are as follows:

GOSPELfTheolaBooker2lava joins others across the country mourning the passing of noted songwriter, music minister and Houston native Dr. Theola Booker.  Dr. Booker served for 45 years as minister of music at the Greater St. Matthew Baptist Church in Houston, where her husband served as pastor, recording several projects including“I’m An Heir” and “God’s Been Good” recorded by the Greater St. Matthew Mass Choir and  Theola Booker and Friends with the Greater St. Matthew Choir.  Dr Booker was an integral part of the Gospel Music Workshop of America,  having served as Assistant Chapter Representative for the Houston Chapter of the GMWA. Iconic Radio Personality Edna Tatum Passes

On the heelsEdna Tatum of the closing of the GMWA Board Meeting in Los Angeles comes word of the passing of one of Gospel music’s distinctive voices, the legendary Edna Tatum has passed away after enduring some health challenges.  A tribute service honoring her for her contributions to Gospel music was held this past January.

Known as the “Voice” of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, Edna Tatum found great joy as a  gospel radio announcer in Los Angeles. She caught the attention of Reverend James Cleveland and introduced him and the Southern California Community Choir on several occasions including the Live at Carnegie Hall LP as well as Rev Cleveland’s last recording with SCCC, Having Church .  In 1996, she was joined by Billy Preston for the compilation of a words and music disc.  Her voice can also be heard on projects from Kurt Carr and the Kurt Carr Singers, Bishop Walter Hawkins and the Love Center Choir’s 25th Anniversary Celebration and  Rev. Daryl Coley.

The Passing of Henry Hanq Neal

GOSPEHanq NealLflava has been informed of the passing of Minister Henry Hanq Neal as a result of complications after suffering a massive heart attack earlier during the week.  Neal is a recognizable fixture in Gospel music circles having performed with, the Pentecostal Ambassadors,  Donald Vails’ Choraleers and more notably with the late Rev. James Cleveland and the Gospel Music Workshop of America.

An accomplished singer, songwriter, choir director and musician, Neal relocated to Houston, Texas in 1984 to serve at a small Windsor Village United Methodist Church under Reverend KirbyJohn Caldwell.  At the time, the choir began with a modest 25 voices.  Under Neal’s tenure, the choir grew from one to five choirs with over 500 active participants.  Neal was serving in music ministry at the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church in Houston at the time of his passing.

LA Gospel Messengers Celebrate 30 Years With Live Recording

LAGM OffCelebrating 30 years of music ministry lifting high the banner for the King, the Los Angeles Gospel Messengers will cap off the closing of the GMWA Board meeting with a live recording on Friday, March 14th at the Peoples Independent Church of Christ.

The LA Gospel Messengers was organized by the late Reverend James Cleveland and received a Grammy nomination for their first album, I Give Myself To You. They have a total of 7 albums to their credit and have had outstanding songwriters and musicians amongst their ranks including Kurt Carr, Calvin Bernard Rhone and their present director, Reverend Quincy Fielding, Jr.

 

Mississippi Mass Choir, Mosie Burks and Chad Johnson

In 1988, Frank Williams, member of the Jackson Southernaires and executive for Malaco Records set out to form a choir using Mississippi singers and musicians.  The auditions resulted in over 100 singers coming from across the state and after hours of intensive rehearsals, The Mississippi Mass Choir recorded their first album and video on October 29, 1988.  The project hit #1 on the Billboard charts within 5 weeks of its release  in 1989 and rode the charts for 45 weeks, garnering the choir top honors at GMWA and the Stellar Awards as well as Soul Train and Dove Award nominations.  (more…)

Flow Records Honors Bishop Richard Mr Clean White

Flow Records will salute  Bishop Richard “Mr Clean” White with a live recording session on Friday, June 3, 2011 as the finale to the Church of God in Christ Annual Women’s Convention Crusade in Dallas, Texas.   Bishop White has been a fixture in gospel music for well over 40 years, recording several albums for the Savoy record label as well as having composed some of gospel music best loved songs including Your Tears and I Don’t Want to Lose Touch for Bishop Paul S. Morton, Jesus Dropped the Charges for the O’Neal Twins, The Will of God for the COGIC International Mass Choir (featuring Karen Clark Sheard), Bend Don’t Break and God Is Not Through Blessing You for the GMWA Mass Choir and many others.  In addition, Bishop White is a celebrated preacher, having conducted revivals across the United States and abroad.
