Men of Standard Take The Stage At Father’s Day Concert

Sunday, June 19th, 2016

MOSFather’s Day 2016 will go down in history as the First Baptist Church of Glenarden, (the church home of Stephen Hurd and Anthony Brown) hosted a Father’s Day Concert that touted the reunion of Men of Standard after a 7 year hiatus.  It was indeed a great moment as Lowell Pye, Isaac Carree and Bryan Pierce took to the stage to take us down memory lane.  The icing on the cake was the addition of Zacardi Cortez (you can only imagine the utter pandemonium, right?!?!?!?!)

The gentlemen quickly but effectively ran through a number of their hits including the Winans’ Trust In God, Yet Will I Trust In Him, Anointed Song, In Your Will, Latter Rain and I Made It.  The songs had huge impact on the audience as the guys ministered messages of faith and inspiration in the music.  We can only hope that this is the start of a tour and a possible CD in the works.

While we wait on the Men of Standard recording, you can prepare yourself as Bryan Pierce is set to record in August at Mount Zion in Greensboro, NC.

Da T.R.U.T.H. Invites You To Hear His Heartbeat On April 15th

Friday, February 28th, 2014

da-truth-02Hip Hop Artist Da T.R.U.T.H. gears up for the release of Heartbeat,  his seventh studio project and the very first project under his Mixed Bag Entertainment partnership with Eone.  “Heartbeat” will feature notable artists Lecrae, Chris August, Isaac Caree, Alexis Spight, Canon, Papa San and Capital Kings along with newly signed Mixed Bag Artists. Production for the disc is being handled by Grammy award winners J.R., Symbolyc One (S1), Justin Ebach, (Newsboys), Alex Medina and a couple of up and coming producers.

Da T.R.U.T.H. had this to say of the project: “I originally planned to step away from music until 2015 to focus on Mixed Bag Entertainment, but after almost a year of watching & observing the culture, I realized that I had a few more things that I wanted to share. What started as a 3-5 song EP, became a full length album. This record is fun – it’s experimental, gritty and engaging, and having my longtime friend (J.R.)  help me to shape the project makes it that much more enjoyable.

Heartbeat hit stores and digital outlets on April 15th.

Nashville, TN was on fire as the 29th Annual Stellar Awards came into time. This year’s award show was hosted by two comedians who truly love GOD. The View’s, Sherri Shepherd, and Rickey Smiley from The Rickey Smiley Morning Show had the crowd in stitches the entire evening. The night kicked off with Bishop Hezekiah Walker singing, “Every Praise”. The song is still the #1 song at Gospel Radio and the crowds reaction to it explained why. The entire room stood as one big choir and lifted their voice in praise unto GOD. The show was being broadcast live on upTV and the praise in the room was high.  In between commercial breaks Comedian Jonathan Slocumb kept the crowd entertained and warmed up. Central City Productions might want to consider doing a behind the scene of the show as some of the funniest moments happened when the cameras weren’t on. The first award of the night was given to Tye Tribbett for Male Vocalist of the Year. After such a big debut of his latest album  “Greater Than”, and the smash single, “If He Did It Before”, this award was well deserved.

Next up there was an all female lineup that included Lexi, Erica Campbell, LaTice Crawford, and JeKalyn Carr. Lexi started it off singing her two step theme song, “Abide”, and Latice Crawford followed behind with some hot new music. The little vocal powerhouse JeKalyn Carr set the house on fire with her song, “Greater Is Come”. Many marveled at how much vocal power and anointing the young lady had. Perhaps if she had more time, we probably would have went over time as the anointing fell thick. Lastly Erica Campbell took is in with some down home Gospel singing her song, “A Little More Jesus”.  Erica’s sister Tina was her biggest fan in the audience cheering her on.  In between commercial breaks the crowd got a chance to see a sneak peak of the new season of Mary Mary which premiers on February 27th.

Actress Kimberly Elise presented Bishop Hezekiah Walker with the James Cleveland Lifetime Achievement Award. Pastor Joel Osteen appeared via video and sent his congrats to the Bishop. Next the now Stellar Award Winning Anthony Brown and Group Therapy took to the stage to sing his song, “Testimony”. The entire room went into a frenzy when the group added vocal inflections to their hit song. I just happened to be sitting near Anthony’s mother who had the biggest smile on her face as she watched her son minister in song on this national stage.

Now the Stellar Awards would not be complete without a performance from the First Lady of Gospel, Pastor Shirley Caesar. Looking beautiful and never aging Pastor Shirley Caesar sang her song, “God Will Make A Way”. Next Melinda Doolittle and Jason and Jonathan Nelson presented Tasha Cobbs with the UNCF award for “New Artist Of The Year”. Despite their being a mixup of the envelopes, Cobbs graciously accepted the award and thanked her parents.  This proved to be bittersweet as when she returned home from the Awards, her Father suddenly passed away.

There was a special tribute to the late great Nelson Mandela. Kirk Franklin who performed at Mandela’s memorial service talked about this great South Africa leader and how honored he was to be there. Jennifer Holiday, The Original Dreamgirl sang a special song in tribute, delivering a song only the way she can.

Sister Bernice Jenkins made a special appearance to this year’s show and read this years church announcements.  Tamela Mann was presented the Albertina Walker Female Vocalist Of The Year by Kierra Sheard who won the award previously and past Stellar Nominee Anita Wilson.  Next Donald Lawrence and Company took to the stage doing choreography to their single, “The Gift”.  The Tankards from Bravo’s, “Thicker Than Water”, presented Bishop Hezekiah Walker with “Choir Of The Year”. After a successful debut of Azusa: The Next Generation no one was surprised Bishop received this honor.

Isaac Carree gave a unique performance of his song, “Clean This House”. The performance started off with a video that set up the theme of the song. In the video Carree sat a  conference table with this legal team. The team brought up some of the issues the song talks about. Next Carree was on stage in a press conference style setting, setting the record straight through song. Carree’s performance will go down in the Stellar history books as one of the most unique live performances.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee was presented with the Thomas A. Dorsey Most Notable Achievement Award. This was a well deserved award as Congresswoman Lee works tirelessly for the Gospel music industry in Washington, DC. She was the driving force behind making September: Gospel Music Heritage Month.

For All the quartet fans there was a special performance featuring The Wardlaw Brothers, The Canton Spirituals , and The Gospel Legends. Dr. Bobby Jones presented Reverend Maceo Woods with the Bobby Jones Legends Awards.  Erica Campbell and Tye Tribett presented Anthony Brown and Group TherAPY the award for “Group/DUO of the Year”. Anthony thanked his team and his parents who went into a Baptist fit when his name was called.

When Tasha Cobbs took the stage to sing her hit “Break Every Chain” the atmosphere was immediately charged. Cobbs took the stage and the power of GOD fell strongly in the room.  The Ford “Song Of The Year” was presented to Kirk Franklin for writing Tamela Mann’s smash hit, “Take Me To The King”.

VaShawn Mitchell, Jonathan McReynolds, Zacardi Cortez, and Jonathan Nelson took to the stage singing a medley of their hits. And Lastly Tamela Mann was presented the award for “Artist Of The Year”. A tearful Tamela took to the stage thanking her family and longtime friend Kirk Franklin and all who believed in and pushed her.

GRAMMY nominated, Stellar Award Winning Syndicated Radio Host James Fortune recorded his new live project in front of a sold out crowd in Atlanta, GA. Thousands began gathering at the Word of Faith Cathedral hours before the event even started. Lines wrapped around the building, parking lots quickly filled, and local interstate exits quickly jammed as people traveled from all over the country to experience “FIYA” Live. Local Radio one Affiliate Praise 102.5 kept the crowd engaged as they waited anxiously to enter the sanctuary. With the concert selling out nearly three days before the event, attendees had the hottest ticket in town.

Comedian Marcus Wiley from the nationally syndicated Yolanda Adams Morning Show was on hand as the evening host. Marcus kept the crowd in stitches giving his commentary about the comical things that happen weekly in local churches. For this live recording James brought together some of the most unique voices in contemporary Gospel and Hip Hop. DA Truth opened up the recording joining James and band on the track, ‘Built to Last”.  In her first ever live feature on an album, BET Sunday Best runner up Alexis Spight sent the audience into a frenzy on “Did It All For Me”. After the recording Alexis explained that she was “nervous”, however her dynamic ministry said otherwise.  “The Worship Chant” featuring Tasha Cobbs will prove to be a fan favorite as it took the house into an intense session of worship. When speaking to James afterwards he explained this album would be “hard to edit” because of the many visitations of the holy spirit that happened on that night. Zacardi Cortez’s, “Let Your Power Fall” and Isaac Carree’s “Empty Me” well rounded the project adding even more pure worship.

James showcased the power house vocal talents of his group “FIYA”.  18 year old Carvena Jones wowed the audience with her tone and stage presence alongside DShondra Rideout on, “Just Smile”.  Todd Galberth added his dynamic tenor voice to the song, “Forever”. James wife, Cheryl Fortune co-wrote several of the songs on the project and lead the track “Best Praise” and accompanied Israel Houghton on “Light The Way”. Josiah “JoJo” Martin known for his unique delivering tone added warmth to the song, “Never Forsake Me”. Minon Sarten and Lisa Knowles took the audience to church on “Miracles” which featured the backing of Kevin Lemons and Higher Calling.

Many special guests were on hand for this live recording including Kierra Sheard, Deon Kipping, Canton Jones, Damita Haddon, Ted Winn, and more.  A very special moment in the evening came when Sybrina Fulton, mother of Travyon Martin was honored. FIYA member  Carvena Jones sat at the keyboard and sang a song she wrote entitled ” I am TrayVon Martin”. The song brought tears to the eyes of many and left Ms. Fulton speechless as she received her award. While on stage Ms. Fulton thanked the congregation for their support and prayers to her family during this difficult time. Ms. Fulton went on to explain that she is encouraged and hopeful for the future.

The lead single of the album will be a personal song written by James entitled “Live Through It”. During his intro of the song James talked about how the song was birth through a season of adversity.  James explains that the amount of pain scrutiny that he experienced with his family was so unbearable at times he didn’t want to get of the bed. A firm believer of living what he sings, James chose to face the adversity head on and lived through the situation. At this point in the recording many were seen wiping tears away as the song hit close to home for many. “Live Through It” will began impacting radio soon.

I had the opportunity to speak with James after the recording and he simply stated, “I am so grateful to GOD. I wanted this CD to be one that had songs that praise teams and choirs could sing and that’s exactly what happened that night. The entire sold out crowd sang many of the choruses along with us at the recording. GOD knew exactly what he was doing and he told me to do this one live”.

James Fortune and Fiya “Live” is scheduled to be released on March 25, 2014. James hosts ‘The James Fortune Show” weeknights on your local Inspiration Station.
