Thomas Dorsey III Celebrates Dorsey Convention 2016

Dorsey, III extends greetings to the multitudes of people journeying to Louisville Kentucky for the 83rd session of the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses.  The oldest known African American singers organization in the world was founded in 1932 by the Father of Gospel Music, Professor Thomas A. Dorsey serving as a vehicle to train and equip singers and musicians in Gospel music.

“As a part of the many efforts to preserve and promote the legacy of my grandfather, I’m particularly elated to personally invite everyone to join the Dorsey Convention family  for the 83rd  annual session of the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses, Inc.’s. Dorsey Convention is Kentucky Bound

presidentgentryDr. Marabeth Gentry extends an invitation for all to join her and the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses for its 83rd annual gathering taking place in Louisville, Kentucky August 6th – 13th.  The Dorsey Convention, founded and organized by the Father of Gospel Music, Professor Thomas A. Dorsey is the oldest African American singing organization in the world.

In addition to a full slate of classes, the convention will offer new music as presented by the convention choirs with special guests to include Bishop Marvin Sapp, Bishop Larry Trotter and the Sweet Holy Spirit Choir, Kierra Sheard, Tasha Page Lockhart, Evangelist Beverly Crawford and the Canton Spirituals. Celebrating the Life of Gospel Great Mother Geneva Gentry

GOSPELflava jMother Gentryoins others across the globe mourning the passing of Mother Geneva Gentry at the age of 101.  Mother Gentry along with her late husband Joshua were instrumental in the promulgation of Gospel music through their affiliation with Professor Thomas A. Dorsey and the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses.  In the early 40s, the Gentrys organized When Singers Meet, a yearly music festival (still in existence)  in St. Louis, Missouri introducing various up and coming gospel singers and musicians.   Joshua Gentry succeeded Professor Dorsey as President of NCGCC and served until his passing in 1990. Mother Gentry served as the coordinator for the consecration service for many years and was featured in the acclaimed documentary, Say Amen Somebody.   Their daughter, Marabeth Gentry now serves as the first woman president of the 80 year old organization.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 19th at the Christ Southern Mission Baptist Church in St. Louis.

Dorsey Convention Prepares to take Atlanta by Storm

Congregants with gather en masse for the 78th Session of the National Convention of Gospel Choirs & Choruses covening in the city of Atlanta on August 6 – August 12, 2011. This will be the first gathering of the convention since the passing of their beloved president, Bishop Kenneth Moales in 2010.  (more…)
