Florida Mass Choir Co Founder Rev. Arthur Jones Passes

imageGOSPELflava joins others across the Gospel Music Community in mourning the loss of Reverend Arthur T.  Jones, Senior Pastor of  Bible Based Fellowship Church and Executive Director and  Co-founder of the Florida Mass Choir.

It was a friendship between Jones and Reverend Milton Biggham that led to the organization of the Florida Mass Choir in 1974.  Under the leadership of Reverend Jones, Florida Mass Choir produced a string of hits with three albums certified as number one, three as top five, and two as top twelve alongside multiple Grammy, Stellar and Dove Award nominations.

Tommy Couch, Jr. Succeeds Father As President of Malaco Music Group

Tommy Couch MARSMalaco Music Group announced today the election of Thomas J. Couch, Jr. (pictured first on the left) as President and CEO. Couch Jr. succeeds his father, Tommy Couch, Sr. who co founded Malaco Records in the late 60s. Malaco made huge strides into gospel by signing the Jackson Southernaires in 1975 followed by the acquisition of Savoy Records in the 80s and Atlanta International Records in 2005. Today, the Malaco roster includes Luther Barnes, Maurette Brown Clark, Mississippi Mass Choir, Georgia Mass Choir and Jekalyn Carr.

Couch, Sr. had this to say on his son’s election: “Tommy was instrumental and took the lead in several of our acquisitions throughout the years with the most important being the purchase of 50% interest in Select-O-Hits, the premier independent record distributor located in Memphis, TN. In this ever- changing and challenging Music Business, Tommy has the leadership, experience and vision to carry Malaco forward.”

Pastor Barbara Best Passes

Pastor Barbara Best of the BL and S Singers has passed away.  With her gift acknowledged early on, she appeared before large audiences at the early age of 10 .  Barbara Best sang with several groups around the Washington, DC area before organizing  Barbara Best and the Deliverance Singers in 1966.  It was from this group that BL and S was birthed (representative of the first initials of Barbara Best, Lois Tillery and Sylvia Wayman).

A. Samar Biggham: Continuing The Family Tradition

A Samar Biggham brings new definition to the expression “a son of the church”,  for church and gospel music come very naturally to him.  Samar is the grandson of noted producer/singer/songwriter and Georgia Mass Choir front man, Reverend Milton Biggham.   During his college years, Samar was an integral part of the famed Benedict College Gospel Choir serving as co-director. He was featured alongside his father Anthony and grandfather on Its Not Over from the Georgia Mass Choir’s 2007 Tell It CD.  Today, Reverend Samar serves as an associate minister at the Mount Vernon Baptist Church where his grandfather is pastor.  Each week, he can be found leading the congregation in worship  while ministering the gospel in song and the preached word at various churches and auditoriums across the country .

On November 16th, he makes his solo debut as his first single Every Praise,  is released for download via Amazon.com and iTunes.
