JJ Hairston Heads To The DMV

The new year brings changes as noted choir master JJ Hairston accepts the Music Director post at the City of Praise Family Ministries located in Mitchellville, MD.   “JJ JJ Hairston115Hairston is a tremendous blessing to the kingdom of God and we are elated to have him and Trina as part of the City of Praise Family,” Bishop Joel and Pastor Ylwanda Peebles say in a joint statement. “While many people are familiar with his tremendous musical gift, we appreciate his kind heart and loving spirit. J.J. and Trina Hairston are dynamic examples of God’s Love and are perfect fits for the tremendous assignment given to the City of Praise Family Ministries to “save families, one soul at a time. We rejoice and look forward to building God’s Kingdom together.”

Youthful Praise continues to enjoy the success following the release of their 7th CD, I See Victory, which made its way to the top spot on the Billboard Gospel Albums chart and featured the radio single Bless Me.

Richard Smallwood Live Recording In Washington DC

Richard BMIOn Saturday, August 23rd, all roads will lead to Evangel Cathedral in Upper Marlboro, Maryland for Anthology, the highly anticipated live recording from Richard Smallwood with Vision. Anthology is Smallwood’s first live recording in in five years and marks 13 years since he’s recorded live in his hometown of Washington, D.C.

The recording caps off a year of celebration for Smallwood.  He was feted at the BMI Trailblazer of Gospel Awards during Stellar Award weekend and was celebrated at the BET Celebration of Gospel.


Gospel Music Finds Its Way To The New Smithsonian Museum

Little Lucy SmithFor a number of years, Baylor University’s Robert Darden has led the charge on preserving music from Gospel’s Golden Era via the Black Gospel Music Restoration Project.  Baylor and his team have sought to identify, record and catalog both well known and obscure recordings that make up the gospel music tradition.  To date,more than 8,000 tracks have been digitized.  The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture announced via social media that the collection will be a part of the museum’s Musical Crossroad’s exhibition.

Nolan Williams’ Voices of Inspiration Participate in National Christmas Tree Lighting

imageThe date and lineup was announced for the 91st Annual National Christmas Tree Lighting taking place on December 6th at President’s Park in Washington, DC.  Celebrated composer and conductor Nolan Williams and his Voices of Inspiration will join the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, the Avett Brothers, Grammy award-winning violinist Joshua Bell, acclaimed soprano and musical ambassador Renée Fleming, multicultural operatic trio Forte, Janelle Monáe, Latin music superstar Prince Royce, jazz legend Arturo Sandoval and the multiplatinum, Grammy-winning band Train in performing a collection of holiday favorites.

The event will be streamed live online as well as rebroadcast on public television throughout the month of December.

Dorothy Norwood Recording Live In DC

Evangelist Dorothy Norwood RecordingNorwood is planning to have “some pure church with a little flair” as she heads to the nation’s capital to record her 52nd album on September 25th at Reid Temple AME Church. Joining her for the session will be Dorinda Clark Cole, VaShawn Mitchell, Isaiah Thomas and Patrick Lundy and the Ministers of Music.


Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir Drops New Music

Battle HymnThe famed Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir’s rendition of the Battle Hymn of the Republic will drop on Tuesday, January 15th, in time for their nationally televised performance of the soul stirring selection at the 57th Presidential Inauguration on the steps of the U S Capitol in Washington, DC.

This particular arrangement of one of America’s most beloved hymns is a collaboration between BTC’s  founder and choir director Carol Cymbala and their music director, Jason Michael Webb. The song soars with majestic orchestral accompaniment and features mezzo-soprano Alicia Olatuja.  Also included in the release is Let Your Kingdom Come led by Brandon Camphor.  Both songs are available for digital download from and iTunes.  Love Lead the Way, the 28th recording from the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir will be released in the spring.






Pastor Barbara Best Passes

Pastor Barbara Best of the BL and S Singers has passed away.  With her gift acknowledged early on, she appeared before large audiences at the early age of 10 .  Barbara Best sang with several groups around the Washington, DC area before organizing  Barbara Best and the Deliverance Singers in 1966.  It was from this group that BL and S was birthed (representative of the first initials of Barbara Best, Lois Tillery and Sylvia Wayman).

Apostle Betty Peebles Passes

Thursday, October 14th, 2010 joins with others across the country in mourning the passing of Apostle Betty Poindexter Peebles, Co – Founder and Senior Pastor of the Jericho City of Praise Church in the Washington, DC area on October 12th of cancer. A mother of 3 and grandmother of 9, she was 76. (more…)
